Commons System Administration Software Overview:

Referred to as Common Programs, is a unique blend of software and routines that are accessed and used by all of the Handicomp program modules. The license of the System Administration Software is required the first time any Handicomp software is licensed for a new stand alone computer or network server. The System Administration Software also includes a COBOL Runtime License which is necessary for the proper operation of the Handicomp software.

What is included with the System Administration Software:

COBOL Runtime License:
  • Most of the Handicomp software is written in the COBOL computer language, with ACUCorp's COBOL as the specific flavor. ACUCorp is a company that requires a user license payment with the deployment of each new system (single or multi-user). Most of the cost of the System Administration Software License is actually a pass through expense paid directly to ACUCorp. It is important to keep in mind that COBOL is the leading computer language for businesses worldwide. Its foundation and rich history put it years ahead of other languages. Keep in mind that while new fangled computer languages come and go, COBOL is here to stay. Information relating to ACUCorp and its COBOL technology can be found on the web at www.acucorp.com. Check it out and be impressed.

Report Viewer:

  • Handicomp has developed a Report Viewer routine that will capture any printed report to a file that can be saved or displayed to the screen. The Report Viewer is great for saving member statement prints, general ledger income statement prints, or, any other print where it might be necessary to review or reprint a past report. It is also great for long printouts where only one page of information is necessary. An example would be an inventory report that may span several hundred pages. Instead of waiting while the printer prints the entire report, the user can save time and paper by directing the report to the Report Viewer. Some of the features of the Report Viewer are as follows:
  • Display any captured report to the screen in either 80 column or 132 column display.
  • Scan through the displayed report by line, by page number, or, by selected text lookup.
  • Print the displayed report in its entirety or by selected page(s).
  • Save the report to a file for later viewing and password the file if security is an issue.
  • Save the report to an ASCII file layout for importing into third party text products such as word processors and spreadsheets.
  • Email reports from report viewer.

Printer Definitions and Selection:

  • Handicomp has developed routines that allow the user to define multiple printers on a single system. These printers can be different models (e.g. laser printer vs. dot matrix printer). The printer destination can be selected from anywhere within any Handicomp software module at any time.

Following are Printer Definition and Selection Features:

  • Special forms support for PCL compatible laser printers including definitions for 132 column portrait and landscape layouts.
  • For the Windows operating systems, any Windows supported printer will work for standard reports.
  • Menu level selection of printer destination is as easy as touching one function key, making a printer choice, then launching the print.
Software Updates (Electronic Distribution):
  • The Handicomp software requires a high speed internet connection or a telephone modem and accessible phone line for the purpose of maintaining and receiving program updates. The software is designed to prompt the user to run an Upgrade Check, via the internet or modem, at least every four months. The Upgrade Check verifies the user software versions, indicates if program updates are available, and, notifies the user of changes in the software between versions. The user then has the ability to selectively update the Handicomp software modules, via their modem, on their computer system.
  • Also, an internet connection is very important in the support of a user's system. It allows for Handicomp Support Staff to access the system remotely for the purpose of troubleshooting more technical issues. For users using one of the Windows operating systems, the PC Anywhere or Carbon Copy software is required for remote access.

Media Selection, Backup, Restore and Format:

  • The Common Programs include features that allow users to make a magnetic media selection (e.g. zip drive, USB Flash Drive, tape drive) from within the Handicomp software for the purpose of backing up and restoring user data files. The selections even allow for the formatting and directory path definition for the selected media. Note, these selections are operating system dependent and function a little differently depending upon the operating system (e.g. Windows, SCO, Novell, DOS). Handicomp has also devised a multi-level system backup procedure that can run independently and automatically at night.

System and Software Module Security:

  • Each Handicomp software module can be passworded independently and the important accounting modules have menu and program level security. Both the menus and program level security require an employee code identification. For additional security, key operations within the Handicomp software modules are written to individual log files so that if necessary, a review can be made of the employee operations. All security can be turned on and off independently.

Menu Configuration, On-line Help, and, other User Friendly Features:

  • Handicomp has developed a Common Program feature that allows the user to define the layout of the top level menu that launches all of the Handicomp software modules. In multi-user environments the top level menu can be defined specific to a workstation. This way if a user did not wish an employee access to a specific module, they could eliminate the module from that employee's main menu.
  • Handicomp has developed the most user friendly software available in the industry. Much of the ease of use comes from the similarity in the design of each Handicomp software module. Each module has easy to use help screens which detail the features of the program, and, which indicate to the user what special keys are available for use at any given time. Also, Handicomp software takes advantage of function keys and easy to use windows with lookup and scrolling features.

Workstation Definition:

  • Handicomp has developed a Common Program feature which allows the user to define specific workstations by name. When defined, workstation identifications (e.g. Sue's terminal) will be printed to each report launched from that specific workstation. This is great for identifying who printed any given material. Workstation Definitions are mostly important in multi-user environments.
